My non-fiction book No Short Cuts: Life Journeys Through Music and Film is especially close to my heart. It weaves together stories of resilience with curated soundtracks and iconic film references—almost like a personal mixtape for life’s deeper questions. I grew up in a home alive with creativity and resilience, shaped by my indomitable Cuban mother. She was the steady anchor of our family, marching my brother, my two sisters, and I to church every Sunday without fail. As the second oldest—and the second of the two boys—I often found myself in the middle, both literally and figuratively. Those Sunday mornings, flanked by my siblings on either side, weren’t just rituals; they were lessons in discipline, community, and the quiet strength of tradition.
Childhood was a kaleidoscope of exploration and adventure. Inspired by my mother’s resourcefulness, I learned early on that obstacles could be transformed into opportunities. Whether I was building bicycles from spare parts, painting vibrant scenes, or losing myself in the magic of music, I found wonder in the world around me.
Some of my fondest memories are tied to my best friend Frank, a Scottish boy from Glasgow. At just eight years old, we spent countless afternoons chasing marbles down the curbs of terrace streets and racing each other in cross-country runs. I could never beat Frank—he always came in first—but those moments weren’t about winning. They were about the joy of testing limits, the thrill of competition, and the bonds of friendship.
Chess became another cornerstone of my youth. My brother and I would sit for hours, strategizing over the board, locked in intense but playful battles. Chess wasn’t just a game; it was a teacher. Marrying and starting a family at a young age brought its own challenges and rewards. Balancing long workdays, overseas commutes, early-morning swimming practices for my son, and the relentless rhythm of daily life taught me one unshakable truth: love and persistence are the ultimate tools for growth. Those years, though demanding, became the foundation for my strength, resilience, and belief in the value of hard work and dedication.

The idea for No Shortcuts was born during the pandemic, in a rare moment of stillness. I scribbled three simple words on a piece of paper: no shortcuts. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp their significance, but those words lingered, like a whisper in the back of my mind.
For over a year, the note sat untouched as life carried me along its unpredictable course. Then, one day, inspiration struck. I sketched an outline—rough and unpolished, but alive with possibility. What began as a small idea soon grew into a deeply personal journey.
Writing No Shortcuts became an exploration of the values, lessons, and stories that had shaped my life. The process wasn’t linear—it was messy, iterative, and deeply rewarding. I wrote, deleted, rewrote, and refined until the message felt true to its core.
No Shortcuts isn’t just a book; it’s a mindset. It’s about reframing life’s challenges as opportunities, choosing growth over quick fixes, and finding meaning in the long road. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the beauty of embracing the process.
